78-S VAM-108 Reg & PL in census
78-S VAM-108 Reg & PL in census
I came across something I think is very interesting in the census for the 78-S Morgan VAMs.
The 78-S VAM-108 has 11 MS in the census (9 Reg & 2 Det).
The 78-S VAM-108 has 10 PL in the census (10 reg and 0 Det).
No DMPL.
I cannot think of any other 78-S VAM that has that many where the MS and PL are so close in number.
Can any of you think of any that are that close?

Speaking of 78-S VAM-108.
The V-108 Discovery PC was auctioned today by Stacks Bowers.
Winning bid was $144.

1881-O VAM-5 is an obvious one. The only reason our census is not lopsided in prooflikes for it is that PCGS tightened standards for the designation around the time the Hit List came around. Nearly all of them are PL/DM or really, really close to it.

I'm happy to admit that the coin and holder is on the way to my house as we speak. I consider it an honor to own because of my profound admiration of Logan and what he's done for the hobby.
I admittedly bid on numerous DCs that night, bagging quite a few but not enough as I'd wanted. Not as much about the coins, although they are nice, but about holding pieces of history that I'll happily gift on when it's my time to.
Another coin that is very common in PL and DMPL is the 1878-P VAM-23. Lovely coin that I own in both shiny stage - the DMPL is particularly stunning, IMHO, but not that rare?

I am glad that you obtained the V-108 Discovery Coin and some others.
I was bidding on the 108 but decided to stop. I then used my funds for a different 78-S.

Here's one I find very interesting being such a fan of the 1883-O VAM 1C, Look at 1881-O VAM 16, all examples are PL or DMPL.

1883-O nut

The 1883-0 VAM1-C IS a very interesting coin to find in DMPL. I find it, initially, a bit counterintuitive.
