Hi Brent,

There are a couple of new listings in this batch for the 79-S issue. As we discussed, the 82-O marriage that had previously been listed as VAM 39 prior to that entry’s more detailed revision has also been added back into the catalog under a new number. Thanks for sending the two pieces for a side by side comparison. I also agreed with your assessment of the 1881 VAM 28 versus 14 issue and we have eliminated the VAM 28 as die wear on a later stage of VAM 14. Several of the other issues likely need more research before the suspected duplications can be formally removed from the listings. Notes have been added to the respective VAM World pages. The new listings will be added to the site soon as well. I’ve corrected all of the holders that needed updating.

1879-S
129 III2 74 • C3af (Doubled 9, Engraved Wreath Leaves) (?)
Obverse III2 74 – Doubled 9 on left side of upper loop similar to multiple dies. Specific obverse identifiable by markers of a diagonal gouge at upper left of ‘D’ shaped void in hair and a pair of closely spaced lumps inside left foot of R of LIBERTY
Reverse C3af – IV S mint mark tilted slightly to left. Some engraved leaves in left wreath bough. Markers of line pattern in bow opening and a short horizontal gouge next to inner toe just above arrow shaft. Same reverse as VAM 88 and 105

130 III2 75 • C3 bd (Doubled 9, Acid Treated Wreath Leaf) (?)
Obverse III2 75 – Doubled 9 on left side of upper loop similar to multiple dies. Specific obverse identifiable by markers of a die scratch in denticles under the 8 and a long thin horizontal scratch in hair behind ear.
Reverse C3bd – Slight acid treated lower leaf at ON. Engraved bars in leaves opposite U and I of UNITED. Marker of long vertical line just inside right leg along upper tail feathers. Same reverse as VAM 81 and 121.

1881
28 deleted, same marriage as VAM 14. Doubling inside ear is from die wear.

1882-O
58 III2 42 • C3e (Doubled 82, Die Lines. O Tilted Left) (181)
Obverse III2 42 – Doubled 82 with strong doubling on left outside of upper loop of 2nd 8 and slighter doubling along top of digit. 2 doubled strongly on left outside of upper ball with slighter doubling along top. Point at bottom of digit shows a split serif. Very slight doubling seen inside top of upper loop of 1st 8. Thin wedge shaped defect at upper right of shaft of 1 occurs on multiple dies. Specific obverse die has many lines scattered throughout portrait. Strong lines at various angles in gaps at ‘bearclaw’ formation in lower hair. A long line crosses the lower neck above the designer’s initial. Short line on cheek behind mouth. Several parallel lines pass thru the hanging curl on Liberty’s forehead. Several lines pass thru the Y of LIBERTY. Short but strong line at lower left edge of lowest cotton leaf. Formerly listed as VAM 39 before 2010 revision detailed a similar specific marriage.
Reverse C3e – III O mint mark tilted left. Pattern of fine lines in wing-neck gap.
