1878 S Trade Dollar

Post by JASONKFLO » Sat Mar 12, 2022 10:03 pm

I picked this up today. I have lots of Morgan's and some Peace Dollar's but this is my first Trade Dollar.
Coin is lovely in hand.
It has a very old obverse scratch around 11 to 12 O'clock but is not distracting at all to me due to the placement.
I figured it was worth bringing home from my LCS .
I don't really know anything about Trade Dollars besides that alot of them I have seen look cleaned and still get straight graded. I think if this was a Morgan it would get details scratch but not sure how they handle Trade Dollar's.
Regardless I think its quite attractive for a circulated coin.

Probably the photos.
Looks quite original in hand. No hairlines and original skin. Nice color as well. Has some dirt and grime around the devices but thats it. Still some luster around the date and letters .

Hi Jason, nice Trade Dollar. I have about 7. I like the OBV and REV design, they don't come cheap though, otherwise I'd certainly buy more. :D

From my painful experience, I suggest you collect Trade Dollars with caution. I would not buy anything unless it is an a TPG holder. Even then you can get burned. There are many, many great fakes out there.

Thanks yeah I was thinking that was a good idea. I bought this from my local shop so fingers crossed it’s Legit . I really only know to look at the arrow position over the date and the ribbon so I am not very knowledgeable on these . Fingers crossed.

There were many problems with Trade dollar dies in 1877 and 1878 at San Francisco, mostly due to inconsistent hardening. Dir. Linderman eventually hired J. H. Hunter to learn die hardening and tempering at Philadelphia, then sent him to SF to correct the problems. Linderman was also anticipating the need for better and more efficient die work as approval the the new Standard Dollar approached.

i would also caution everyone when buying trade dollars. i saw 2 slabbed counterfeits that were so good that i could not tell they were counterfeits until i was shown why. one is in a PCGS AU50 holder and the other is ICG60(and i warned ICG what to look for before it was slabbed!).These are of a class never before seen. no rounding or beevling of the devices, weight, strike, and luster are correct. they are frighteningly good.
