Help with 1886-P (Eight in Denticles)

Post by Melvin_Deal » Sat Mar 12, 2022 2:15 am

Hello Vammers!

I'm relatively new to this but am very patient and diligent. I very much respect your time and would waste mine quite readily as opposed to yours! So far, I've wasted 31/2 hours on this one and very respectfully ask for help.

This coin has a DMPL reverse to about 15 inches and a PL obverse to about 5 or 6. It's been mis-handled and unfortunately cleaned leaving the usual fine hairlining. I would consider it an AU58 in its present state. Please forgive the quality of my full coin photos... they are the best I can manage... I do, however, have a decent microscope.

My conundrum is that this coin has an eight in the denticles... plus part of possibly a one in the gap to the left of it. I can find no 1886-P VAM with an eight in the denticles. There isn't a whole lot to go on, but I've attached photos of what I can find. There are quite a lot of really fine polishing lines, some in unusual places (most of which I attribute to the proof like surfacing). There is very little doubling... Imageany I've seen (I scanned the entire coin under my microscope) I've attached photos of, as well as any aberration discovered (the most notable being a very small dot below the earlobe adjoining the area one would typically insert an earring. The front of the eye also may have the slightest doubling but is so weak I can't assert this... you decide.

If you wish any photos of a specific area I will most readily take and post them as soon as I can.

I really appreciate any help I may get as I read every VAM and VNA and looked at every photo in them!

Sincerely,
-Mel

I now think it is an eight laying sideways in the denticles.

The cotton bolls are interesting.

I found just a couple more things... nothing significant.

The eye is not doubled, just weak.

Hi Welcome! I see what does appear to me to be an 8 in the denticles. I too went through the 1886 listings and I didn't see any pictures showing that. I'm hoping @messydesk or @vampicker might give an opinion. Perhaps, they may be able to help you figure this one out...kenny

Thank you for that Kenny!

I went through them three times. One time completely ignoring the 8, It doesn't seem to match any of them.

Sincerely,
-Mel

As the coin has already been cleaned, I soaked it in Acetone to see if maybe it's an illusion created by debris. It's still there.

Thanks for that Vam-mysterio!

I'm pretty sure too. I looked at the other mints for that year thinking it was possibly a mint error pressing of a mint-mark less coin from New Orleans or SanFran but it matches none of those either. New Orleans has a couple "Eight in the denticles" but neither are as dramatic as this one and they're under the second eight.

I have no idea who those people are or what VSS is. I am familiar with ANACS of course but know nobody there or who those initials represent. As I said, I'm relatively new at this. Any guidance as to who or how to contact relevant people would be most welcome.

I am going to see who else weighs in here as well with any ideas.

Thank you all for your time and attention in the matter. I really appreciate it!! :-)

Sincerely,
-Mel

Hmm... I haven't seen that and am drawing a blank. I'd have to see it in hand, but from here it looks like something I'd add to the VAM catalog.

Thank you as well messydesk!

How would I proceed to have a new variety studied and perhaps recognized? I am clueless!

If you send the coin to ANACS, team Vampicker will research it for you. If a new VAM, they will label it as a discovery coin but unfortunately Details Cleaned. Grading fee + $12 for research. Takes about 2 months. Visit their site for the submission form.

Awesome!

I appreciate it MarkyB! I have 14 to go for variety confirmation with them already... I'll add this to the order.

Just include a brief note with the coin about the possible MPD and maybe mention this thread to jog my memory

Glad to help. I have to admit I was a bit jealous as I have no VAM with anything in the denticles.
Lo and behold tonight, going thru my nonattributed but slabbed coins: 1885-O, VAM 17. I feel slightly more worthy now. GL with that coin.
