Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
There was a thread a while back on the PCGS boards where I mentioned seeing coins with both strike doubling and repunched mint marks. This one crossed my desk last night, and it's a doozie! 1884-CC VAM 5 has a repunched CC, which you can see at the yellow arrows. This coin is also strongly strike doubled in this area, flattening the mint mark and letters DO on the left side, as indicated by the cyan arrows. I see coins all the time that someone asserts has a repunched mint mark, but the smashed doubling that is duplicated on other elements demonstrates that it's not.

Re: Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
Great photo John! Thanks for sharing.
When in doubt... don't.
Re: Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
I believe one of my VAMS has the strike doubling that is mentioned in this thread. A link to a photo showing the doubling is provided below. The arrows point to those features that I believe show strike doubling. In addition, it looks like some of the leaves are doubled rimward; and are examples of strike doubling as well.
Can someone confirm that the doubling is strike-related.
Thanks

Re: Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
Yes, that is strike doubling. Notice how the mint mark doubling matches the other stuff. Big indicator right there, since the mint mark is applied to the dies separately from the rest of the detail.

Would that be considered "SSDC"?

Re: Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
Thanks for the information you provided John. Linking the doubling to after the Mint Mark was applied to the die makes it very clear that the doubling had to have been created during the striking process.
Thanks, Andrew. And I also want to additionally thank you for providing me the coding that made it possible to post a hi-res photo to the MB from an external source.

Good info.
Re: Strike Doubled Repunched Mint Mark
Very nice example.
I haven't been able to VAM as much as I'd like lately, but I'm glad I checked in for this one.
Thanks John.
