Help! 1878 8TF Weak Nostril Vam

Post by brianlayman » Thu Feb 17, 2022 5:40 am

I am trying to figure out if this is a VAM. The closest I could find for this was 14.5 Spiked -A-. This VAM mentions the weak nostril but the coin does not have any of the other attributes of the 14.5. The weak nostril aka missing nostril, is also on other mint marks and dates but not on this version.

The coin also has a triangular shaped spike in the ear, a doubled N on the ONE, and the forth right star has something going on with it.

It might have some others I have not noticed.

Thanks,
Brian

Take a look at the v20’s
Is the r in (pluribus) broken?
I meant doubled

The N photo made me think of VAM 21 - worth a look maybe?

She's been battered around quite a bit but shouldn't stop you from IDing the type. Sorry if I'm saying things you already know...

She isn't a 14.5 straight away, though.

You may have done this already, but always start with the lower wing feathers to quicly narrow your starting place:

Hard to tell from your pictures but both sides seem fairly devoid of feathers so many are immediately ruled out. The "N" of ONE seems to be a fairly strong doubling that is almost surely a VAM-21:

Again, tough to tell because although your pictures are nice, they don't focus on the major parts - doubled "B" of PLURIBUS, doubled second right star,

Hope this helps...

Start with the eagle's beak. If it's longer and hooked, it's VAM 18-23. If it's shorter and squared off, it's VAM 1-15.
