NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
I do not believe this is either the VAM-1D or 17A but she clearly has been impressed but some denticles! Perhaps new? If you know what VAM she is PLEASE let me know. Thanks.
Have a great day!

Not finding a match, and that's even after I fixed the wiki search function. The 1 isn't a match for VAM 5, either.

When in doubt... don't.

Yeah, toss it in with your next batch for me. I don't recognize the die markers either. I don't have any notes for VAM 5, but I agree this is likely a stage from that die pair. With as pronounced as those impressions are, you'd think they'd have been noted before.

Re: NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
If those are "denticle impressions" why are so many missing? The spacing should be "i-denticle" to a real coin.
Re: NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
These have been measured in the past and the spacing does match that of the actual denticles. The reason for them is likely that an obverse die being installed as the hammer die fell onto the installed reverse die, striking it with its edge. These are almost always found on the reverse in this spot.

Re: NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
Spacing on the pictured coin seems to be missing several teeth....how can that occur with a solid die?
Re: NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
No teeth are present. The marks are from the edge of the die and are from the gaps between the denticles. The spacing is consistent and should be slightly greater than an individual denticle. A dropped die would not ever sink an impression to its full depth, so you'd be unlikely to ever see something that exactly matches the width, Unless, of course, you owned a coin that had the outline of the denticles connected to the bumps from the spaces in between.

Re: NEW ? 1888 Denticle impressions
Something like this....
Since it made contact at far less of an angle, the bumps aren't pointy and are much closer to the edge.
