I think this is a new D2 1921-P

Possible new discovery submission guidelines have changed. One of the requirements is to post images ahead of time to see if anyone can make an existing attribution. That’s what this thread is for – to vet the coin before sending to John & John Esq.

In a group of 35 coins I recently received I thought this was going to be the easy one to identify because of all the scribbles. Instead, it’s the only one I haven’t figured out. The coin is close to PL, so there are a lot of things that undoubtedly aren’t on later die state examples. It has no cracks whatsoever, of course.

The scribbles are a real headache. There are a LOT of them and they go in seemingly every possible direction, which means each tiny move of the light source makes new ones become visible. (On top of that, the holder contains several lint bits that confuse things even more.) That’s why I’m posting 5 different photos of just the scribbles, because each one shows something that the others don’t.

I’ve gone through the scribbles guide 4 times focusing on different strands, but without success. All it has done is make me more confident it’s a new VAM.

Thanks in advance to anyone who joins me in this rabbit hole.

It appears to be a very nice example of VAM 3HA1

Admission: I really don't like scribbles. I rarely ever look at them. They're frustrating and often more confusing than helpful.

I vaguely recognized the double polishing lines at the lips, and looked through my coins until I found it.

Thank you Tom! 3HA1 it is indeed.
Leroy's super-tight scribbles plate image left out a lot of the things I was trying to find. I guess I should have gone through the scribbles guide at least a 5th time.

I added a note about the lines from the upper lip to the main 21-P page. It should make it easier to find in the future.
Can we get your great shot of the upper lip added to the scribbles page?

The request is officially out to anyone who has the skills to do that (not me).
