clueless about this 1921-S

Post by DHalladay » Wed Jan 19, 2022 4:06 pm

Can anyone help me with this? I have no experience with S coins.

There's a lot of die polishing on both sides.
There are some cracks, but not a lot.
The mint mark looks totally unremarkable.
There's a lot of "orange peel" effect on the reverse, especially close to the rims and in the area below the eagle's beak.

If more photos of other areas would be helpful, just say the word!

It looks like the slab took it hard in the scribble zone. Can you polish it or at least smear some oil on it to make it easier to see?

You're totally right about the slab being chewed up in that area; it looks like it was a practice tablet for workers doing scribbles. I did what polishing I could – and the oil suggestion was amazing; this is much better than I expected to get (even though there isn't much there to see).

VAM-1CZ looks like it might have your break through the AM but as there is only one pic for that VAM I'm not sure what else is out there. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... -S_VAM-1CZ

Thanks for the suggestion!
My coin sure looks similar, but there are some pretty major crack differences that make me think it's different.
I will reach out to Mitch, who discovered 1CW and see if he has any thoughts.
