1881o vam 1 L

Post by vamsterdam » Thu Dec 23, 2021 11:16 am

I found my 1881o vam 1L “discovery piece”! I thought it was lost to the vam community. I guess i had more forethought than i gave myself credit for.

Cool!

Wonder who'll try to put the Planchet defect vs. the $10 Gold die issue to bed now that LVA has ridden off into the sunset? :?

I sent the $10 gold piece to Leroy for his use in study. As I remember JB had some thoughts about a planchet flaw. I would recommend that we let JB review the Discovery Coin and if I need to I will send the gold piece.

Compare with VAM 8.

I have 22 VAM 8s posted on my web site, so have at it.

Also, there is a small gouge that runs horizontally across just above the mint mark. This does not always show on photographs because of lighting and the faintness of the line as I remember.

This line is not on all coins labeled as VAM 8.

Yeah, the line above the mint mark is key, actually. You can barely see it on this image. I'll have to hunt through others for it. I'm pretty sure it matches what is on VAM 1L.

I will try to pull all my VAM 8 coins and see which ones have the line. I did it once before and realized there was a line on some but not all. But it has been a while.

https://www.1881o.com

I am going to look at all my VAM 8 coins in a minute since JB thinks this might be the point of overlap.

I have 22 examples, but the features we are looking for probably don't exist below AU, so make it 17.

It seems right now that the first marker is the thin line above the mint mark.

I pulled all the VAM 8 coins and here are my conclusions

The line appears on just 5 of the coins, and none below AU

It is really present only on PL/DMPL coins, but one AU58 with really nice fields

Working from the top grade down
21386923 MS64DMPL
31584848 MS62DMPL
81818381 MS61DMPL
8117637 MS60PL
81619094 AU58 but with highly polished fields so was probably a lightly circulated PL/DMPL

None of these exhibit the clash that is believed to be on the discovery coin, but I am not willing to discount the existence of that feature until JB examines the coin.

The die scratch is faint, but there

Given the grade of coins where I found it, I would say it was on the die and wore away quickly.

If JB decides that the perceived clash is a planchet flaw, we might still have an 8.1 and 8.2

Let's don't let this one drop since we have all the coins we need to solve it. I know JB is busy right now, but we need to keep this issue in front of us until he can get to it.
