Morgan Dollar Discovery Procedure Update

Post by messydesk » Fri Dec 10, 2021 7:15 pm

As we're transitioning from Leroy maintaining the VAM catalog to John R, David, and I doing it, we need to establish procedures both among ourselves and for submitting to us. We expect that this will be settled shortly after the FUN show. Leroy's current data and archives are en route to me now, and I will need time to assimilate this.

Treat this as you would any other end-of-year break in submissions.

Thanks for the information John.
And please make backups of any of LVA's digital material.
When in doubt... don't.

Any submission that would require him to potentially change the VAM catalog.

I'm ready to receive more submissions for new discoveries for Morgan dollar, but to avoid everything showing up at once, I would like to have them be by appointment, especially if you have several. Send me a message or e-mail telling me what you have. Be sure to read the updated guidelines for new varieties. If you're sending other coins for attribution, go ahead and include the new ones with them to minimize the USPS's take on this.

Please note that new Peace dollars are handled by David Close. He will advise when he is ready to start receiving them.

was/is anything done to give homage to leroy and/or george for their massive contributions? it sounds nice that we all could just do it individually but that obviously would be overwhelming.

With John B ready to start this, so am I. Please exercise a degree of restraint and include notes for the stuff you think is new. I think it will still take us a while to streamline the process.
Still not ready to dive into new scribbles.
Just like John B stated, you don't need to separate the potentially new stuff from other grading and attribution stuff thru ANACS either

And yeah, read the guidelines

If you already sent this to Leroy, I can do the pedigree. If it needs research, it's up to Dr Close to pick when he's ready to start

Both men were awarded the SSDC's highest award. Mallis has the literary awards named in his honor. And that's just the SSDC. Similar honors have come from the ANA, NSDR and NLG. It's a good idea that's already been done multiple times from multiple organizations

this is wonderful, so thanks for that confirmation! :)

i did mean more on a personal level that MANY of us for many years even decades have communed with leroy and/or george on a pvp level. as silly as it may sound, i was thinking something more akin to a birthday/thanks card that people sign. perhaps 1-2 people could take all the names of people that want to be included (the list is long i'm sure) or perhaps a BULK thank you from the many vammers as members of vamworld and abroad as non-members. just spitballin'.

while it would be our way of saying thanks to leroy it would also be for us to be happy to show our gratitude.

i would have just sent something but i don't know his current predisposition and while i'm sure he KNOWS how thankful many of us are, he sure seems like the type to appreciate a good thank you card/letter, perhaps even just an email, if he is still able to receive as such?

it must have token a near SUPERHUMAN amount of organization to work with all the people he/they did on that pvp bulk level.

perhaps those official recognitions were enough?

this is the last i'll mention it though. not forcing the issue. only positivity and goodness here.

Many of us have done the sort of smaller personal gestures you mentioned individually over the years. A thank you card or note from a collector would probably be well received even if he no longer responds. I'm not sure how often he gets out to check his PO box mail now.

This. Leroy doesn't need or want any other awards or accolades.

Waiting on the Peace thing to start up. I don't care if I get discovery credit or make a nickel on them, but have been holding back some slabbed and raw pieces for years because I just cannot send them back into the wild knowing they are probably listable.

I have a 2021 Morgan with a small CUD on the obverse I would like to submit, but I can't find an email address to the administrator or proper area of this site for submission.

Thank you for your help in advance.

The 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars are not eligible to be listed as VAMs, as they are considered modern commemoratives.

I find it interesting that the 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars are not eligible. They are legal tender after alldo.
I hope that changes at some point since there do appear to be such creatures among them.
What a crazy world this is! :D

There are other venues like CONECA or Wexler for this sort of thing. They are not and never will be part of the VAM catalog.
