any ideas?

Post by fogie » Thu Oct 28, 2021 6:01 pm

I have been looking at some 1887-S VAMs and noticed some unusual marks in the "hair D" on several (VAMs 2, 2A, "7", 8, "10", 15 and "16"(as currently attrbuted)) - any ideas on what these marks are? Some show evidence of a "removed clash" some do not show any evidence of a clashing at all. I am leaning towards a clashing but....

Isn't this where the "bearded eagle" clashes come from? I don't have my clash guide in front of me to verify.

It does remind me of the 1880-P VAM-25 series.

None of the 9 coins photographed above have a bearded eagle!

Anything suggestive that the dies involved might have shared a common hub?

It is a clashmark and the very thing that puts the beard on a bearded eagle. It's from the curved underside of the eagle's neck. It's a deep and protected area that's about impossible to polish away without creating a big void. Look on Liberty's neck at the hairline for traces of the beak

I just sent a 87 S to LVA a week ago  Mine had this clash mark in the D void. Didn't know it was a clash mark at the time. :o Here's how I described it to Leroy.
1887 S
OBV:
Far Date, Heavy File lines around and between 18 in Date.
Heavy file lines/scratches thru NUM of UNUM. File line around Lips and chin. Gouge(Line?) thru D hair void. Lots of light file lines around Lady Liberty.
Small die chip bottom left serif of R in LIBERTY.
REV: Mint Mark filled set and tilted a little left.
File lines under Eagles chin.
Also has 2 small scratches to the back of Eagles head near wing gap. These are probably to light to list but would make nice PUPS.
