1878-V9 dot on wing

Post by ...kenny » Sun Oct 17, 2021 10:20 pm

Has anyone else noticed the dot on Eagles right wing. The LVA pics for V9 don't show it, but the pics for V9A do. I have an un-clashed V9 with dot, is this considerd an MDS? Thanks...kenny

You are talking about a 8tf?? If so, I would also like to see a picture of this dot. Jim

Not sure what the significance of the "dot" is, or whether it matters in any manner.

But my V9 clashed has it.

One thing I heard from Pete "Da NUTT" Bishal years ago was that there were dots visible on the eagle on some A1 reverse 8TF coins because Morgan worked in wood rather than plaster and nailed the finished products together. The dots were actually nail heads that got transferred with the design. I have no idea if this is accurate or not, or if this dot was supposed to have been one of the nail heads or something else was. I do know that Pete was quite the 1878 savant, and you couldn't just dismiss his statements as being those of a crazy person.
