1884-CC VAM 4A help needed

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sat Oct 16, 2021 3:21 pm

I'm wondering if someone can do an overlay for me.

At the mouth, it appears that there has been at least 3 clashes. At the neck/chin, looks like only 2. I see nothing at the neck or hair.

But across from the lower serif of the R, poking out of the wheat stalk, it looks like the upper serif of the D in DOLLAR.

I've tried doing an overlay and had no luck at all. When I invert and flip a photo of the reverse, it's almost a perfect match in regards to shape and location.

Really would appreciate ANY assistance in figuring this out.

Thanks,

Jonnie

Have a look at the definitions page. There are some clash overlays on the clashed dies page, link below.

Thanks. One of those is almost exactly what I think this one would look like. Another degree or 2 of rotation and the D serif would be there.

So, now the question would be is that what this is?

Zoomed in further for a closer look. Now I see what could be 3 clashed D and the spacing appears to match what I see at the lips.

A closer look at the hair vee shows what could be the edges of letters but I had to get really close to see it.

The reverse shows where they worked really hard to polish away as much of the clashing as they could. It left some slightly beveled areas.

I guess the question becomes is this significant enough to send off or is it just much ado about nothing?

The clashing is minor and not particularly noteworthy. Your image of the area around the wheat grain shows several of the gouges that define a VAM 4A. This die damage is not from clashing, but might be from a clumsy effort to efface clashmarks. There are several minor stages in this progression. In my opinion none of them warrant an additional listing.

I figured they wouldn't be that significant. But I had never seen that particular clash before and thought it rather interesting.
