OT - Eagle from mint - spotty condition

Post by Dirtdoctor » Thu Oct 07, 2021 2:26 pm

A bit off topic but not sure where else to go with quick question.

I ordered the 2 coin reverse proof eagle set. Unfortunately the post office ran over the box with a forklift crushing the display box.

I might live with that, but one of the coins has milky spots on it. It is not moisture - I opened the cap and let it breath with no change. First pic below does good job in showing the spots before I opened, and the second shows after breathing. The spots are just as pronounced, but pic does not show them as well. I then ever so lightly brushed a spot with my finger and could see no change.

I called the mint and they will give me a refund, but there are no replacement sets left. Any remedy for the spots, or should I just return for my money back?

Sell it for a modest markup today, buy one without spots in a few years.

What are the spots? Worth trying acetone on swab?

OMG, they literally ran over your box! I thought you were kidding about that but that it had been mashed up but a USPS worker. The new boxes the latest coins come in are appalling. Cheap is insulting to the word cheap. All three of my holders arrived cracked and the plastic tray was ripped in one and creased in another. I've managed to scrounge up a few clam shell cases but not enough. Wouldn't have happened if they'd have used clam shell cases like they did for the type I's. As for the milk spots I've read that it's left over borax residue from the minting process and that is tough to get out. I've got a few Canadian and Australian silver coins that I've soaked in acetone and it does nothing. Bummer as that's a double blow with not only the box getting crushed but milk spot coins too.

That's terrible. I would call the mint and tell them you want a replacement coin OR off to Coin World this story goes. They have to have replacements from credit cards and checks that didn't go through. Being run over is the best/worst part. Call the magazines and see if they are interested in your story. A little nudge to the mint is good for them. My set came today and they are fine. Just my opinion. I could be wrong. JB has the most realistic idea. Thanks.🐍

I called the Mint (first sent an email and go no response) and described the mess I had. The rep checked with her supervisor and said they had no replacements available. She said they would send me a return mail label so I am not stuck with postage and insurance.

 I really just wanted the coins because they are attractive and were a tuff get, but frankly the spots on the West Point coin are impossible to ignore.

I would not send them back , I am sure you can still turn a profit on them.

You have been abused by the mint, and the post office.
Both private corporations posing as government entities.
You have little recourse.
Suggesting that you pass inferior goods off to unsuspecting others in order to recoup your loss is only a reflection of popular moral standards.
Bite the bullet, take the loss, and spend your time and resources on bringing the offenders to account for their offenses.
I would rather be right than popular.
I know I'm not popular, but always working to be right.
