Newbie Question - May not be VAM Related

Post by caltx01 » Sun Oct 03, 2021 6:37 pm

Hello everyone, I am a new member here, having been interested in collecting US Silver Dollars for about a year now. I am glad to find this site and it's wealth of information about VAM varieties. It makes collecting much more fun, but I am spending hours sometimes with each coin I own, trying to identify the correct VAM.

I have an 1884 Morgan which I think has a New Orleans mint mark but I am not sure. Please take a look at the mint mark pic attached and let me know what you think. If this is a die error I would think that it there would be a lot more like it, if it is circulation damage I would sure like to know what could cause this damage with no additional damage near the mint mark.

I would sure like to hear your opinion, and please forgive if I am posting this inquiry inappropriately.

Thanks!

Welcome to the joys of VAMing.
There is nothing inappropriate about your question.
My first guess is a post minting damage (PMD) on a New Orleans minted coin.
More photos may help identify the VAM.

Yes, the fact that there is no damage around the mintmark makes me think it was struck through grease or some other small foreign object in the mintmark on the die.

Nasty bag mark on the mint mark. There are some 84-O VAMs with filled mint marks. VAM 5 is the first that comes to mind. Far date, filled mint mark, not much of anything else to look at.

I think the other VAM with filled mintmark is VAM 39.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

Thanks for all the great replies. Here are additional images of the 1884 O Morgan. I will investigate the VAMs that mention filled mint marks.

Regards!
