1882-CC 2B or 2C

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:58 pm

So here's another stumper I've come across. Pretty sure it's in the VAM 2 family. Has the doubled 882 and just the left C is filled. After that, I'm getting lost.

It has a faint sliver of a 1 present in B1 and EDS of B2.
It has a faint lip clash like in B2.
It has the chip in G present in B2 and LDS of B1.
Its clash marks at the upper left wreath are crisp like in B1.
And it has the polishing roughness shown on C1, only more extensive.

I'd be leaning toward 2B1 LDS if it weren't for the polishing roughness. It's not mentioned, but is it present in the 2B's?

Any help is appreciated.

Jonnie

So, I'll take that as a distinct possibility of a maybe, maybe not and keep digging.

While I haven't done this exercise with this coin, one thing I often find helpful is to stop looking at the pictures and read only the official specifications.

VAM 2B1. I'd caution you about calling it EDS or LDS. It's already a minor stage designation that was further split. There's a limit to the minutia that even VAM collectors will tolerate.
But seriously, the 'polishing roughness' is actually a C3 master hub deal. You'll see it show on multiple dies as weird blocking around some of the lettering and lumps under 'we trust'. On this or any reverse that shows traces of it, it's strongest on the earliest stages and gets polished away as the die goes thru its progression.
