Vam designation "JOH-23" 1921-D

Post by Windycity » Fri Sep 24, 2021 11:46 am

So apparently I have not been paying attention but can someone explain the "JOH" designation? I was looking at the die break page for the 1921-D Morgan and the last few listings do not have traditional VAM numbers but rather "JOH" numbers.

JOH numbers were assigned by Rob Joyce and late Jim Hart thus JOH via 1st letters in last names. They were 21-d's not up to new VAM #'s but able to be recognized for researching purposes as I understand. Fun With 21 book gives a list of their research #'s as of that point in time.

Since the book was written, many have had VAM numbers assigned due to scribbling scratches, or later die stages being found and determined to be listable. There's a list of these on the "Fun with 1921" page. If you have one that has not had a VAM number assigned, it may be eligible, especially if it has scribbling scratches.

So my coin is a match to the die crack listing and it seem to be substantial enough for listing. Don't see any sribbling.

Close-up picture? Leroy's standards have shifted to include more trivial breaks than he did 15 years ago.

Nice photos. Fun with '21 is a fun time. Good reference material there.

I don't believe it is a JOH-23. The crack from the first 1 in '1921' to denticle indicates to me it may be a coin from the 1921-D Vam H series.

Not the H series, no scribbles and the breaks are different... particularly on reverse.
