1888-O PMD, planchet flaw, struck through, or what

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sun Sep 19, 2021 2:38 pm

Looking for a good explanation of what this is.

In the fields, the "ribs" are noticeably raised but it's not as visible where they cross the breast yet still present.

As to the possible VAM, it looks to have a high date at the far left of normal and the mintmark might be set slightly right. Most likely a VAM 1, but I've been wrong before.

Your thoughts, as always, are appreciated.

Don't take my word for it, just venturing an opinion..... but thinking it is a planchet issue. Have seen that look on several other Morgans before.

Agree. Looks like a planchet issue that began in the rolling mills in the preparation of the sheets of silver.

I'm glad to hear that there're other examples of this.

But now I have to wonder, how did it survive the minting process?

It is not a great rarity! Yes there are more out there!
