1892-S VAM-8 Die Pair 1 and Die Pair 2

This has been discussed some time ago on this forum. The 92-S VAM-8 obverse die was used with two different reverse dies. You can see the difference in the mint mark placement on the LFCPs on the VAM page here.

The 1892-S VAM-8 is a Hit List 40 coin with doubled/tripled Liberty's lower hair curls.

It took me a while to get one example of each to send to Leroy that I considered in good enough grade to avoid confusion.

The Die Pair 1 and Die Pair 2 descriptions by Leroy can be confusing, but if thought of as exactly two different die pairs, it is easier to understand. Leroy's reference to the EDS and LDS are merely references to the EDS and LDS use of the obverse die with the two different reverses.

By the way, anecdotal evidence suggests Die Pair 1 is the less common die pair than Die Pair 2, by a factor of about 5 to 1. The scans stink. I will try again at a later date to redo them.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats Alan!

I looked for years trying to find a doubled hair. The only one I came across was a non-PCGS AU55. In addition to being quite expensive, I didn't agree with the grade... so I let it go. :(

And now I'm no longer interested in acquiring one.

Let's try these scans of the VAM Plates. Wayne, if these look okay, go ahead and update the pages. I appreciate it.

Also, here are close-ups of the M/M placement between the two reverse dies. The first is Die Pair 1, the second is Die Pair 2.

That second reverse is pretty damn cool.

I suspect the polishing lines Leroy references on the reverse die may be planchet striations. They are not on any other VAM-8 Die Pair 2 reverse coins I have run across. But the doubled upper tail feathers are cool. Regardless, the M/M placement and doubled upper tail feathers are the tale-of-the-tape so to speak.

Wayne, looks great except for one thing.

The last photo "Additional Photos" should be titled to merely show the doubled upper tail feathers without any reference to polishing lines.

Thanks again.

"Hey Wayne, one other change please.
Swap the mint mark photos at the bottom of the "Additional Photos" section. Thanks."

No never mind. I figured out how to do it myself. Thanks anyway. :P
