OT - Dan Carr Set Almost Done

Post by alefzero » Sat Sep 11, 2021 9:26 pm

Among the esoteric sets I have been assembling is a complete set of Dan Carr products where they are overstrikes on large format US dollar coins or employ the design elements of them. I am down to missing only a handful out of over 100 different ones. Here is the latest ANACS grading. Very happy about the two MS70 ones.

Date Mint Denom Variety Label Grade
1921 D TOKEN D CARR MORGAN $ 100TH ANNIV O/S ON USA 1921-D $ 70 -- the engraved Morgan (100 sold)
2017 TOKEN WORLD LEADERS FAILURE WW I ENTRY CENTENNIAL SILVER 69 -- reeded edge (55 sold)
2020 MEDAL DAN CARR WILSON DOLLAR O/S ON USA 1921-D $ 60 -- (abt 50 sold)
2020 MEDAL DAN CARR WILSON DOLLAR O/S ON USA 1922 PEACE $ 63 -- (abt 50 sold)
2020 MEDAL DAN CARR WILSON DOLLAR O/S ON USA 1972-D IKE $ 67 -- (abt 50 sold)
2020 TOKEN MOONLIGHT MINT OPEN HOUSE DBL STRUCK ON USA 1922 $ 69 -- (85 total all overstrikes)
1921 TOKEN D CARR BROKEN SWORD PEACE $ O/S ON USA 1921 PEACE $ 70 -- high relief (100 sold)
1921 TOKEN D CARR BROKEN SWORD PEACE $ "2021" C/M O/S ON 1921-35 $ 58 -- antiqued (525 sold)

And a couple just bought for yucks:

2020 MEDAL DAN CARR COVID-19 OUTBREAK 1 Oz .999 SILVER 70
2021 MEDAL DAN CARR COVID-19 OUTBREAK 1 Oz .999 SILVER 68

Indeed. A case of starting down a rabbit hole with the OCD collector personality.

Wow, neat! I have the Merlin 1 oz Silver Bar and one of the 1715 Fleet pieces. I would love to add some of the other Merlin rounds, but they don't surface often. Nicely done!

Just wondering why "1921 TOKEN D CARR BROKEN SWORD PEACE $ "2021" C/M O/S ON 1921-35 $ 58 -- antiqued (525 sold)" would only grade a 58? Wouldn't having a assigned grade of 58 would insinuate that an overstruck coin/medal was physically circulated. Any ideas?

Carr makes some of his pieces look circulated. I have one of his Standing Liberty Quarter tokens in a VF30 holder. The apparent grade is consistent with what the actual would look like . If you wanted to make a technical argument, you could, but technical grading died back in the 80's
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

Agreed. I also have one of the Antiqued Broken Sword Peace as well as the Bessie Coleman, Astronaut, Buffalo & Jefferson Nickel O/S. Interesting pieces.
