A gift, a ‘pick, a TRU_T

The call came from a friend here on the boards:

“Are you interested in a 1921-D TRU_T? An unattributed 63 just went up on eBay.”

“Well of course. But aren’t you?”

“I’ve bought a couple of coins lately, so I need to slow down for a while.”

I found the listing quickly. I had worked with the seller before, so I sent a text and we did a fast, easy deal. The coin arrived four days later:

It is gorgeous. Yes it has marks, but the semi-PL lustre is dazzling and the eye appeal is massive. The best TRU_T I ever had before was one point lower and not as pretty.

One thing that’s always grabbed me about VAM 1A2 is The Gouge between the eagle’s legs. It’s ridiculously big. It isn’t a monster polishing line, it’s the start of an amputation. I never get tired of seeing them:

Thank you buddy. I think I know how I’m going to reciprocate.

Nice pick (and nice touch-up job on the slab label)!

There are 2 1921-d coins here.
The 1a1
The 1a2
Which one is the most rare to find?
Anyone know the pop of both?
I have a pcgs ms 64 in 1a2 in my sets.
I also have a pcgs ms 64 1a1 for sale that is attributed by JB.

Would like to see pop on these to see which is the hardest one to find

Larry: The answer to "which one is the more rare to find?" is simple. It's the 1A1, because all of the letters in TRUST being present makes it easy to overlook. The SSDC registration total for 1A1 is 17, versus 39 for 1A2 – a difference that is actually a lot smaller than I would have guessed.

But "rare to find" doesn't matter to most of the coin collecting world, not when 1A2 is a Top 100 coin with an extremely easy to see feature that translates into huge demand. 1A1, however, is not on any list so it is just a minor curiosity in comparison to 1A2.

Very pretty coin. Going to CAC it or leave it as is?
