1888 P Morgan with VAM-1B...and more?

Post by HeadCoach » Wed Sep 08, 2021 1:24 pm

First, thank you for allowing me to participate in this forum. About 4 years ago, I forgot, I bought two (2) Morgan's and put them in a drawer for safekeeping. So yesterday, I was looking at both coins and noticed some crazy stuff going on with the coin.

Members at CoinTalk recommend that I contact you guys because some of these errors are not listed in the 1888-P VAM list.

Most already known VAMs have small features on them that aren't listed, and some have MANY things that aren't listed.
Everything you show is the normal clashing I would expect to see on VAM 1B... which was listed because it is clashed.
When in doubt... don't.

I'm not really sure about the title. You say you have two coins. Are you saying that the coin in the linked photos is of a VAM-1B? Are you asking for help to attribute this coin?
It is clashed, but it is not a VAM-1B.

Keep looking at the listed 1888-P VAMs for this coin.

Yes, I do have (2) Morgan coins. But I thought I should focus on just one right now...the 1888 P
You say it isn't a VAM -1B, but two out of the four pictures are shown on the VAM. So are you saying that the only true VAM is the picture that shows a little line on the neck of the obverse?

The reason why I am asking for advice is that I have gone through pretty much all the photo links on the VAM 1888 P link. and I don't see any of the things on that page that are on my coin. Could they be new things that people haven't seen?

I was told that PCGS will not do the work for me and that I have to find all of the VAM myself. Okay, what in H*ll am I paying for? Should I grade the coin as well?

Maybe I should start a grading company where I make the customer do all the work, and all I do is put the coin in a slab with a label and call it good!

You covered several things in your last post.
"You say it isn't a VAM -1B, but two out of the four pictures are shown on the VAM."
Are you sure that the four pictures are exactly the same as a 1B, or are they similar?
If you can show me that they are EXACTLY the same, then I stand corrected.
I know what VAM it is. What I don't know is if you want to learn and VAM it yourself, or would you like me to tell you?
Either way is fine with me.

"Could they be new things that people haven't seen?" No, it is a listed VAM.

"I was told that PCGS will not do the work for me and that I have to find all of the VAM myself. Okay, what in H*ll am I paying for? Should I grade the coin as well?"
There are a couple good options.
1. If you want grading and attribution, ANACS will grade and attribute all known VAMs. JR's service at ANACS is FANTASTIC! @vampicker
2. If you have coins already graded, VSS (Variety Slabbing Service) will attribute any know VAM and place the attribution sticker on your slab. VSS is recognized by Heritage auction. JB's service at VSS is FANTASTIC! @messydesk

If you want to self attribute a "P" mint morgan (1883-1904), you need to starts with the date position. You'll see that list gets narrow down tremendously.

You were told correctly; PCGS does not make VAM attributions, you have to tell them what it is on the submission form.

What we pay for is for them to tell us we are right – and it is not at all rare for them to not agree, and then argue when presented with proof that what we say the VAM is is correct. PCGS has even rejected attribution confirmation letters from Leroy Van Allen!!!
When in doubt... don't.

I'll reiterate it's not VAM 1B. I don't see any clear evidence of letter transfer on your coin. Without something like that, it wouldn't be any of the listings noted for clashes. If all you have are typical clash marks , then it's time to move on to other stuff like the date position. It looks near and slanted in your picture.
It is worth considering that even if you found a decent VAM on this date, none of them are worth grading and attribution fees on a polished AU example.
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

Did you ever figure out which VAM you have?
Would you like us to tell you?

No premium for VAM-36 that I know of.
