Designation of new VAM listings are attributed by Leroy (only). Sometimes an early die stage of a late die state is attributed as a "Revision". Recent example is 1921 P VAM 8B Revision which shows dot at wing -scribbles - die scratch G - displaced field break at lips - beveled denticles - WITHOUT Die Break UM ...

Roger,
Thank you for the insight. I had gathered that may be the case in having a VAM designation considered, that only LVA can officially do such a thing. How does one go about having a coin considered by Leroy, or at least pose the digital information such that he can at least render a preliminary decision on whether it's worthwhile to consider, or "not worth it"? Thank you!

IF, you didn't want to go straight to LVA, you could 'PRE' determine by sending to ANACS('J.R.') or VSS(MessyDesk) and have them attribute your coin before sending to LVA. Either will examine your coin and give you what you need for information...kenny

I would simply refer to this as VAM 1AQ EDS and note that it is the stage before the rim cud.

Roger, Kenny, messydesk. I appreciate the information! I have gone through the logical thought process based on these responses, reading the Guidelines for Die Varieties, and comparing for example against the 1921-D VAM-1H1 - 1H4 progression that 1AQ EDS makes perfect sense. According to the Guidelines for Die Varieties, the CUD on 1AQ itself wouldn't be grounds for a new designation based on the reasoning that the cud doesn't extend beyond the denticles.
If the 1AQ EDS had been discovered prior to the LDS with cud and originally designated 1AQ, and the cud state subsequently discovered, it would be described as 1AQ LDS rather than redesignating "1AQ1" and "1AQ2". I suppose the other alternative would be the 1AQ EDS might not have been interesting enough to designate as a VAM by itself and only the 1AQ with cud was enough to bring forth a designation. With all that, now my quest will be to find a "1AQ" with an even larger cud worthy of redesignation!
