ID help 1885

Post by ringslinger911 » Thu Jul 22, 2021 8:03 pm

Hi all. New to forum here. Have an 1885 with light reverse clashing and can't find any info.
Please advise.

Thanks I had checked all those and didnt find a definite match but curiously on the "whats is worth" channel the post by DirtDoctor for the 1880 VAM 39a shows a reverse in the second set of full photos that has the exact curved die scratch inside the wreath along with the same clashing on both sides.....5 years later same reverse die?

Welcome to VW.
That curve that you mention is also from the die clash, it is not a scratch.
I understand why you say it is an exact match to the 80 VAM-39A. However it is different. There are lots of clashed dies in the Morgans. A very small difference can make a big difference in attribution. And sometimes value.
So it is not the same reverse used 5 years later.
Hopefully Mitch can join in and help you out.

Thanks that helps. Since there is no clashing on the obverse I'll just assume this is a regular strike (with a clashed reverse)
