VAMweenies Rise

Well one of our granddaughters, age 9, arrived yesterday. My wife told her if she was good I would teach her about VAMs and she maybe could become a VAMweenie if she was smart enough.

We will see, but maybe so!

pardon me, but what is there to comprehend being "smart enough"? this is a reference for all the varieties. one looks up the date/mint combo and then the variety list comparing what they have to the detailed known possibilities. and then hopefully identifies theirs.

am I misusing this site/forum or missing something else here? seems like anyone of any reasonable average intelligence can do it?

Not if you are 9 years old and have never seen a Morgan Dollar or heard of a VAM. Hope to have all four grandkids able to recognize the 1D, 5, and 27 before they go home. We all need to introduce our kids and grandkids to VAMing, otherwise the hobby dies.

Well it only took Caroline, age 9, about thirty minutes to be able to identify the 1881-O VAMs 1D, 5, and 27. She liked the 1D Flaky Eye the best.

Very cool! I think I have that same ringlight on my stereoscope. If you black out about 1/4 of it, the light will be a little less flat and you'll see a little more depth. Try with just holding a card over part of it and you'll see what I mean.

Oh, and in 4 years, she'll be eligible to attend the ANA Summer Seminar. Most YNs end up going on a scholarship.
