OT 1914 PCGSPR67 BUFFALO NICKEL

Post by bhinkle » Fri Jun 11, 2021 3:22 am

Well, I finally found and bought a very nice 1914 PCGSPR67 PROOF
buffalo nickel, with some nice toning, for my proof buffalo collection.
I just received it today.
Enjoy, Bert
Below is some interesting information on the proof buffalo nickels,
that I found online.

The Philadelphia Mint struck proof versions of the Buffalo Nickel
for only six years of the series.
Collectively, there were only 16,148 Proof Buffalo Nickels issued
compared to more than 1.2 billion circulation strikes.
The proofs were struck during two separate periods at the beginning
and near the end of the series.
Proof Buffalo Nickels were first issued from 1913 to 1916.
The first year would include both the Type 1 and Type 2 varieties,
with the buffalo standing on a raised mound or flat ground.
The proof coins of this period carry matte proof surfaces, often toned
to a natural gray-blue-pink color.
Most are well-struck and pieces are always in demand.

Those early proofs are superb examples of the artistry of the coiners.

Nothing like a target toned Buffalo. Always loved the delicate undulation in the fields of early specimens. Just think another ton of pressure on that squeeze and you would have a PF68+ split tail reverse. Beautiful score & thanks for sharing!
