Help needed with 1901-O Morgan (Appears to be a cast counterfeit)

Post by Raybob15239 » Mon Jun 07, 2021 6:57 pm

Picked this up in an online auction for $35 as a gamble it was a contemporary counterfeit. Clearly looked like a cast counterfeit from the seller's pics (which were not great), but in hand, really looks like a crude cast copy.

There are signs of circulation, but I may be misreading the coin. It feels heavier than a Morgan should (I don't have a scale) and haven't had it tested on a sigma machine yet. Color is flat and lifeless and the ring seems ever so slightly off. There is probably a chance to undo the purchase, but wanted to get some opinions here first.

It doesn't seem to match the known 1901 O contemporary counterfeits, but it may just be a really bad sample, too.

The whole coin is really bad. If its contemporary, I'd keep it; but if it's modern, then I need to send it back to the seller for a refund. The MM doesn't match the known counterfeits, and I need some guidance from those who have more experience with these.

Thanks

I'll admit - I've kissed girls not as pretty as that. But at least I can blame my youth and a bit of cheap beer...

I'd not kiss that one, though.

A keeper because it is definitely a conversation piece!?

That might just be distortion from a photo being taken through a loupe with something (phone, loupe, coin) not tilted right. The coin might simply be heinous, but real.

I'd get my money back. Spend it on something much better.

Can only return it if it is fake. Going to take it to a friend with a sigma to test it. Had one person suggest it was coatedwith mercury?

Reminds me of the things dentists used to make thinking they could fool people.

This pings as 90% on a Sigma, so at least it is silver.... but it is butt-ugly and has a lot of iffy details.

I have never heard of Dollars coated with mercury as has been suggested by another person, and don't know what it looks like. The fields on this coin look like they are bumpy and missing a layer. Can anyone offer any insight on this?

I'm dubious of this being treated with mercury. That's an 'old-school' cleaning method and leaves a very unnatural looking shine without hairlining the surface. You'd typically find it on Bust Dollars and Capped Bust Half Dollars.

Not sure where you bought it but if ebay you can return it if you don't like it. Choose "Not as ..." as your reason to return and ebay will automatically authorize the return. If bought somewhere else, I'm not sure of the rules but I also think you can't really be sure it is authentic as opposed to fake. I'd return it and buy a round if all you want is silver.
