Apply VamWorld Knowledge gently to your other areas

Post by Geseas » Thu May 20, 2021 5:46 pm

Please take a look at this '1' in '1920' as if this were on a Morgan.

My guess is PMD. The outlined in red has some potential for a die crack but looks to be hidden by damage... Thanks for your insights and questions.

Looks like a crack to me. Every series of coins I have ever collected had some coins with cracks, some of which were very large.
When in doubt... don't.

It actually looks like a hit to the coin to me. Look the to left of the ridge for its full length.

It may be fun to go out on the Bay to try and snag another Walker; just like this one.
The '1' should provide an easy PUP, even with the poor photos on eBay.
Has anyone tried to do for Walking Liberty Half Dollars what LVA and friends, (you guys), have done for the Morgan & Peace Dollar?

@Geseas i coauthored a book on walking liberty half dollars. i tried to get as many doubled dies, rpms, and other varieties in there as possible but quite a few did not make it. those missing were the missing designers initials(no AW), and the 1918s clash that produced a huge extra ray on the sun. a number of new doubled dies have appeared since then too. there are few die breaks for the series. if i had the time, i'd love to redo the walker book. i would add quite a bit to it.

Thanks, JB

What you outlined is very evident on the coin; in the right light.

@vamsterdam
I did some searching for your co-authored book and had the opportunity to read some of your articles. Is that book available somewhere? I enjoy your writing and would certainly encourage that 'Supplement' to the Walker Book. :D

@Geseas what articles did you read? it's been quite awhile since i wrote any articles. i wrote some in errorscope but it has been awhile.
There are quite a few doubled dies that i'd still like to write articleson. and re engraved proof dies that i have discovered.

@vamsterdam

I did a history search on this new machine of the sites I went to that day looking for that Walker book. I think I found the spot where you became John Roberts, (vampicker). I apologize for my mistake. I admire writers and encourage you to continue your work on those Walking Liberty half dollars. To be able to express yourself clearly is an art. I wish I could do it. Thank you for your insights here.

You accidentally deleted the closing bracket in the /mention tag. I fixed it for you.

I am in the middle of writing an attribution guide for another series. It was the same period and thus the same cast of characters at the mints. So, obviously look for the same variety issues that are among the early Morgan dates at those same mints. Also gives me a pretty informed preunderstanding of likely rarities based on various characteristics.

I found it. I just have to learn to point this machine in the right direction.

Would I be wrong to think, 'The smaller a die diameter is; the lesser the chance for a die crack variety in that series?'

Do dimes have fewer die cracks than quarters? ...maybe what I am trying to say.

I would think clashes would become more frequent; as the die becomes smaller?
