"2021" Morgan and Peace dollar imitations from Mint

Post by RogerB » Wed May 05, 2021 6:07 pm

Whenever the 2021 imitation Peace and Morgan silver dollars become available, I would appreciate members thoughts on the pieces. They will be briefly discussed in the next edition of the Peace dollar book and I'd like to include observations by active collectors of the series.

Thanks!

I'm in for Morgan commentary... assuming any of my orders go through. 🖖
When in doubt... don't.

I’ll be trying for them assuming I do not get blocked or have the website crash . Or have to mark which boxes have street lights or something like that

I'm definitely going to order but not to optimistic on being successful. If anyone gets more than they want, I am a buyer. :D

I will be trying to get one of each. I doubt I will be successful.
I swear, someday I will learn how to grade Peace Dollars!

On my first look at the images on the mint web site I had several observations
1. The relief will be more like the SAE with soft lettering and devices, and maybe higher relief on Liberty
2. The degree of accuracy is likely to be better than the originals just because of the improvements in technology
3. The privy marked coins looked strange to me with the mint marks enclosed in a raised oval
4. Errors (potential VAMs) are going to be few and far between, and potentially valuable
5. This group is likely to study them to death and find errors others cannot see
6. I did not see any mention of PL, or DMPL editions and maybe recreating these is not practical given the change in technology

Will consider P D S coins; personally don’t like the privy mint mark coins...

My interest is fading. I did want to place an order a few months ago, now not so much. To me these coins have no character, kind of sterile copies of the real coins.

I have to agree but considering all issues will be U.S Mint genuine 100th memorial anniversary specimens with additional Mint Marks they will be a quasi necessary evil for type collectors. I am going to attempt to acquire one of each {doubtful} and create my own plexiglass holders for each mint and one for the CC & O. These will most likely be my last U.S Mint purchases as well. I really wished they would produce the missing 2009 Proof SAE instead...

I will most likely get, try, for the Peace Dollar. I will hate myself for doing it but I'm weak.🐍

Sterile is a good way to put it. The detail will be less sharp on the Morgans, the luster won't be the same, as the dies won't be used long enough. They'll be attractive, but in the same sense that leads you to say that a mortician's work makes someone look so life-like. I'm still going to see what I can get.

Mintages are low enough to warrant an attempted purchase.

@messydesk LOL!
and without DMPl and pl's, with the goofy looking privy marks, and all, they are taking a good product and dumbing it down. and then not making enough for the common man to get them at the bank, even if they made them in copper nickel, is sad.

I thought it was a 10 max from the Mint at $85 per . Or is there something Im missing ?
Just wanted to know if Im missing something . Im in for 2 of each and Yes they do look kind of sterile . But I would kick myself if I didnt get at least 2 of each , and Yes the Privy mint mark is kind of cheesey , LOL . But I will give it a go since its a low mintage we shall see what the future .holds for these coins .

Mitch, The email I got from the mint was a 25 maximum limit for 2021 Proof Silver Eagles,
It didn't say anything about the 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars. Am I wrong? :D

Informally comparing the imitations with real 1921s, the new ones are "mushy." The camber of relief is too shallow and is actually worse than that produced by the old Janvier reducing lathes.

Best not to say anything about the "Morgans." 1921's look spectacular along side these.

Hope I'm wrong.
