Had an 1878-S VAM 112 on my desk

Post by vampicker » Fri Apr 30, 2021 1:50 pm

I think it's only the second or third time I've seen one of these. I took a few pictures and will likely do it as a column in a few months.
In this group we can see the marker lines under the right boll, the doubled edge of the wheat leaf with lines between the leaves and grain, the diagnostic gouge in the wing and the engraved feather at the base of the wing.

More pics....

On this example the gouge at the first S of STATES has been polished down slightly. There are multiple lines along the inner edge of the eagle's leg. The mintmark position is about as normal as it gets.

Last batch....
The center of the left wing (viewer's right) is overpolished. There's a small patch of parallel lines at the back of the eye and there's a couple of lines in the T of LIBERTY

It's a fairly old Canon Power Shot hand held thru my microscope lens. I've tried to replace it but the newer cameras have too wide a field in the lens to capture images thru the scope eyepiece. Adobe Photo Shop makes me look like I have more skill than I actually do.

When in doubt... don't.

Same setup I use. Back the camera away from the eyepiece about 1/4". I use my fingertip between the eyepiece and lens (the lens housing, not the actual glass) to help space and stabilize it.

Nice find for someone. Did it by chance have a few die chips on the eagle's breast ? I also noticed it didnt have the gouge that Leroy pointed out through the S of STATES . Mine has the same polishing lines around the S and no gouge.

Yeah, the chips on the breast were there. The gouge at the S is still visible if you know it's supposed to be there, but it has been polished down

Thanks, John.
Perhaps someone with page editing privileges can add these to the V112 page. Pete's V112 post also had some decent pictures that could be added as well.

I'll add the photos to the page. Do you want to keep all of the photos that are already there?

The 'additional photos' that are already on the page are from the discovery piece, so I'd vote to keep them.
