What are these smear lines called if anything. I've seen it on a few coins but not like this. I occurs all the way through the motto. I didn't find anything on the attribution page. Just curious.

Caused by grease being in the die.

Messydesk would know for sure.
I've always assumed it was late state die erosion.
When in doubt... don't.

Referring to the spikes on the top edges of the letters, you assume correctly.
