An insane 1882-O Vam-17B wow vam.

Post by vamtiques » Sun Mar 28, 2021 10:45 pm

On the 1882-O vam-17 pages 3, it mentions the vam-17A as possibly being quite rare, so I wonder if the 17B (wow vam) is just as rare? I happened to cherrypick a couple of years ago just this very vam (definitely confirmed as a vam-17B) in a lustrous MS-63 or roughly. (Might be AU in grade perhaps)

Here are some pics. I wanted to not take this beauty out of its container, as to not handle it.

Hate to break the news but 1882-O VAM17B is really very common. 17A MUCH less so but even it does not command any extra $$$$.

I must not have read that on the 17 page, even though it's a wow vam. It would be nice to see where the general consensus lies on how rare or common the particular special vams, like the wow vams, the top 100, hot 50, hit list 40, Kimpton 12, etc.

Hate to break the news to you ,
But if one of the top vam experts (in this case Fogie)says is very common
You better believe it is common
And I agree with Him
Several of the wow vams are nice and cool to collect but
Not rare,in other words are very plentiful
Which is a good thing so they remain affordable to all collectors
Beginner or seasoned collectors

Thanks Vam-mysterio, actually, I didn't know fogie (Brent) was an expert till just now. Here I was thinking that most if not all of the top and major vams on these big lists were not very common to outright rare, that seldom were they common. That way we general collectors have a good understanding of the rarity factor, and for those others that we talk to on vams in general.
I am still getting more familiar with the discussion part and all the members there. What I do when I purchase a new silver dollar, I go to any of the specialty vams for that particular date/mm, and see if it happens to be one of them, then work down the list if it is not until I find the correct vam. This is why I really like this site, well put together.

When all of the "lists" were put together, some easy coins were intentionally included... coins that people could find that might get them excited about the lists as a whole. Had the lists consisted only of very rare coins, very few people would have found very few of them, they would probably get frustrated, and they might entirely lose interest in VAMs. The key with picking the easy ones was to pick coins with interesting features.

When in doubt... don't.

If I were ranking all the VAMs in the WOW! set by rarity, the 17B would be the one I'd rate as most common. The VAMs in the set were included because they are REALLY cool, rarity and value really played an incredibly small part in that (honestly, rarity and value played a bigger part in one that WASN'T included, the 1889-P VAM-23A, than it did any that were included).
That being said, WHO CARES! You found a really neat and BUSY VAM, congrats! Only 59 to go to finish the set!! ;)

As an aside (and I think to Dennis's point above), the way you overcome a "common" VAM is to try to find a "special" one, like an awesome toner or an outrageously higher-than-typical grade. With one like the 17B, they are generally found uncirculated, with many MS63's and several 64's registered, so to stand out I've only seen a couple MS65's or better (For the record, even I didn't need a "special" one bad enough to put down MS65 or higher money for one, but I'm impaired... and cheap!).
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

The original list, the Top 100, was comprised of coins that were rare and/or interesting. Some have little to no premium, because they're common, but they're still fun to find and relatively easy to spot. These are sometimes referred to as "gateway VAMs," since they are the first ones a collector is likely to find, which will subsequently hook them on VAMs. Some will take some hunting and you'll be excited to find them. Some are real stoppers. You may have to pay up for them, or you may cherrypick one and get a really valuable coin cheap.

Yeah thanks guys, I am learning much here. I also have the 1888-O hot lips in a G-6 condition, and a near miss 1889-P vam-19B1 (I know the 19B2 is the wow vam). I have a few of the other top listed ones. :)

Agree - common doesn't equate to boring. I have multiple 17Bs and each one I pick up is just as special because this coin is a cool one...

Congrats on the fun find. If you enjoyed the discovery, it was worth the investment of your time and energy.

Happy hunting for more!
