1900-O Slanted Date Help Needed, Please

Post by Raybob15239 » Tue Mar 23, 2021 2:08 am

I have been going over this for a couple weeks now and can't find a match. I don't have all the supplements and not all of the VAMWorld listings have date photos, so I may be missing something obvious.

I bought this because it looked like it might be a contemporary counterfeit. There is some roughness around the letters. There's some really weird stuff going on with the rim that doesn't look like it is possible to be PMD (but it might).

Obverse pics:
Slanted date. Date placement doesn't seem to match known VAMs. The 1 is set about halfway through the third denticle. There appears to be a small gouge in the 9. There's also some things going on in the denticles under the date.

On the reverse, there is weird damage to the rim by TED. Mintmark seems to be a medium mintmark, centered and upright.

I can't figure this one out. Any ideas? Help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Ray

I see a die crack in 'A' in AMERICA running through the eagles left wing. So look at VAM 2C which also has such a die crack. The 2C is a slanted date and was revised as such, but did not have its VAM number or die classification changed on revision, so it is overlooked at times as a slanted date candidate.

Thanks. I looked at 2C, and while the date position is good, there is no gouge in the R. The Wing-A break isn't pictured and when looking at the LFCP Reverse pic, the crack seems to be in the wrong place. Not sure 2C will work for this.

looks real to me but abused. the genral softness and beveling of the devices does not appear as they do on the "privately made" series.

Agree. Purchased on eBay with not great pictures. In hand it looks more like a real mint issue, but now i can't match it up. It has been frustrating me. The problem is that I don't have all the supplements and some of the slanted date listings on VM don't have pictures.

I am thinking that the rim damage is a planchet flaw that has been exacerbated by circulation.

It's not the VAM-2C, so that leaves the VAM-38. If you look closely, the VAM-2C has been duplicated as the die 1 variant of the VAM-38 anyway. That must mean multiple die varieties of VAM-38 exist, so you can call it that and be done. I'm aware that your mint mark is a medium 'O' and does not look like the pictures posted of the VAM-38 reverse. So you could send it to Leroy and he might list it as a new discovery or die pair. You never know. There are lots of duplicates in the 1900-O series. Stay tuned for another update and VAM kill that I feel will happen soon. Thanks go to RogerRock for loaning me his recent discovery coins for examination.

Thanks. Sounds like I need to sit on this one for a while. I will check out 38 and see if it is a fit. Appreciate the help.
