DEALERS BEWARE and LOOK OUT

Post by twohawks » Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:17 pm

Well a newer batch of counterfeits that look like just normal run of the mill "Culls" 1921 S, P D and older dates.

If you look at the leaves on the Olive branch, you can see the fully broken leaf.....
no matter the year they all have this defect. Note: some are even clashed.
Its not that they are that good, its that they are run of the mill scrappers that look like Cull's that while running over a batch you may miss. Im sure its happened as that an error the dealer made that ended up with 7 of them in different dates

That S mint mark is WAY too big for a genuine coin.
When in doubt... don't.

This is more to worn people that don't look as close as we do. In hand while just flipping on coin after the other while culling dollars out, they are extremely easy to miss. The look and feel is that of a real cull, and in real common dates they just go into a Cull bucket.

Aside from the uggo fake coin, the artificial black coloring should stop you in your tracks. Wear gloves if you're forced to handle stuff that looks like this in quantity.
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

Few years back when I was buying
Large lots of Morgan / Peace dollars
This 1900 s Morgan was in the pile
That I was going thru. It didn’t look right to me so I put it aside for further analysis.
The weight is close to a real Morgan
But it’s noticeably thicker!
Then I got this precious metals verifier.
Bingo it was fake...does anyone else use this machine, or what do you use?

I’m looking to upgrade to the Pro model as it can verify 100 oz silver/ gold bars all the way thru.

Back in 2011 I purchased 2 saint gaudens, they were fake, but they were made with real gold....I actually got my money back, but that’s another true story!

Years ago at my LCS the owner showed me a box of real gold fakes. Mostly $5 and $10 Liberty head. He thought they were produced in Lebanon in the 50`s.

Love the really slanted date on that 1900 S!
I swear, someday I will learn how to grade Peace Dollars!
