1900-O help, please.

Post by Raybob15239 » Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:12 pm

Last week I took two shots at possible contemporary counterfeit Morgans. The first turned out to be a hit (1902-o VAM 3). This one, 1900-O has me a bit stumped.

It has a slanted date. Not sure whether this is a normal date or not... doesn't seem to match existing Normal Slanted Date VAMs. There is also a spike/gouge coming out of the 9 (it passed the poked with a stick test).

The mintmark seems to be a normal O.

There appears to be pitting around letters and devices... the wing gap is narrow.

What else should I be looking at?

Sorry for the jumbled post... have trouble posting from my phone. Here are a couple more shots.

Reverse has cracks on both sides and there is some funky stuff happening on the rim by UNITED. Looks like PMD, or it could be some sort of planchet flaw, but it just looks odd.

Here's a better shot of the date with the 9 spike:

The coin looks genuine to me. Check VAM 2C for a diagonal gouge line inside the R loop in Pluribus. The 2C is actually a slanted date but Leroy decided to keep the 2C designation when he revised it. The 2C also has a die break in AM in America. Hard to tell from your photo if its the same.

Already eliminated 2C. No gouge in the R. Date placement also doesn't work with the other slanted dates.

Might be unlisted... but with the pitting and what looks like little bubbles on some device edges, it may also be a cast counterfeit. It definitely saw circulation, so if it is a counterfeit, it would be a contemporary counterfiet. I will try to take better pictures with my digital scope. These were just using a 10x loupe lined up with my cell phone camera.

Still stuck. Not a contemporary counterfeit.

Not a counterfeit. Now I am just trying to figure out the VAM number and am stumped.
