1888 Struck Thru? Updated

Post by Windycity » Sat Feb 27, 2021 5:30 pm

At first glance I assumed this to be a bag chatter coin - reeding damage. But upon closer look, I think it might be struck thru something.... not certain what. Welcome opinions.

Very interesting ! Struck Thru errors on silver dollars vary greatly relative to the intrusive debris. The subject coin displays an unusual herringbone pattern that is both singular and overlapping. The diagonal linear path from between the stars across the cheek changes to a curving lateral over the ear.
It is very difficult to ascertain whether there is lateral metal displacement from the photos which would prove PMD.
One possibility could be reeded edge contact through a $1000 canvas bag tossed on top of another.
Thanks for sharing !

I want to believe this is strike thru, that the effect travels thru the ear hair is very telling. Hard to say what the object was as it vaporized under pressure. IMO. Peace Roy

As an update on this post, I found a 1967 quarter with similar marks... this coin is a GEM uncirculated coin with the same type of marks... has to be mint error or planchet flaw. Again, welcome opinions.
