Need help with 1878 VAM

Post by Ncphoto » Tue Feb 09, 2021 3:02 am

I have a 1878 VAM and cannot find the right attribute. I have registered to Vamworld and will submit the images there and see if it’s a new VAM. Anyone here have expertise in this area?
VAM 84 shows the broken D which this has
VAM 84a with a clash under neck and line under first 8

Neither of these show any of the other images

Yes the clash under the neck and line under the 8 are on this coin but none of the other images are attributed to 84a

84A only covers 2 of the 12 issues pointed out on this coin and none of the ones on the reverse

As has already been pointed out, you have an 84A.
You have shown several photos that highlight features of any 84A. Those features are not listable features and are fairly well known by those that look at 1878-Ps. For those reasons, the pages are not filled up with photos of features that don’t help attribute a VAM nearly as quickly or as easily as other very obvious features.
The polished L, the dash under the 8, the clashing, and the longknock pretty well seals it up as an 84A.
That doesn’t mean that it isn’t good to examine your coin and photograph it the way you did. All of that close examination helps to build you up as a good VAMmer. The more you learn the better.
And you do take good photos.
Keep asking questions. There are lots of great people here to help.

Welcome to the site.

Try your hand at getting a good shot of the main feature of this VAM-84A.
The clashed "E" on the reverse.

Not every feature present on every VAM is mentioned in the catalog, otherwise you could have descriptions that went of forever, especially in 1878, and the important things to look for, in this case the overpolished L, clashing, and long nock, be missed because they're buried in a lot of noise.

You have to consider the die.
It wears feature's may change, cracks appear. It could clash several times. The die could get refurbished and so forth until it is retired.
Take the Sarface coin and look at the die progression from stage 1B0 to retired.
Most VAM's die progression is not followed closely. Only very few get that much attention.
