Do I have something here with this "Metal in 2" 1882-P?

Post by bownarrow » Thu Feb 04, 2021 8:06 am

Hello again VAMWorld

I appear to have an "8 in denticles" VAM akin to VAM-20 but there is no doubled upper reverse that I can see. The photo of 20 shows doubling above the We but I'm seeing none on this coin.

I'm also seeing some other artifacts in the denticles in addition to those between the 8s. If you look at the denticles below and to the left of the left-8, is there the top outline of another 8? In the loupe, the line in the space between the denticles under the left 8 is as noticeable as the one between the 8s and is similar in appearance and height. In "1882date4.jpg" and "1882denticles.jpg" photos, it is the most noticeable.

This is a metal in date VAM and what I'm seeing on this coin matches with the text description of VAM-1D1 (or 1D2) specifically: "Obverse III2 1 – Second 8 has die chips in bottom right inside of lower loop. Both loops of 2 are filled with shallow raised metal from die chips and flakes with polishing lines."

However I see none of the secondary pickups for 1D1 on this coin. I also don't have the pitted E of ONE that is a feature of 1D2. The metal in the date itself doesn't look much like the photos of these VAMs either.

There is a large round dot on the bottom of the 2 I couldn't find on any other 1882 VAM.

Metal in Date VAM list for convenience:

I see that VAM-1D1 is under review by LVA so if this coin will help in any way to that endeavor I will happily send it off for closer analysis. I haven't really prepared anything about the reverse of this coin other than to confirm there is no pitting. I'm ready to take any other pictures necessary or look for anything else until further instructions. Thanks in advance guys, you're the best.

Maybe go thru the list again and look for "Dot 2" in the title? Bet you find it pretty quickly.

BTW, this looks like a fairly nice example of this particular VAM

Or use the search function on the Wiki and find it even faster.

Thanks guys I will use that search feature from now on, that was great.

At first I was wondering how I could have missed it but it just isn't on the metal-on-date list. I should have seen it though...my bad.

Hoping to land something that sticks at least enough to cause some debate. Thanks again

Everybody misses stuff now and then. Keep using the resources and tools available to attribute your coins, it'll make you better at it.

I'll add that the stuff I got wrong at first taught me a helluva lot more than the easy answers

Also from the photos, looks like you have an EDS stage. Nice !!!! Check gouges in denticles to the left of the date. :D
