Schmutz could be helpful against Vammers

Post by Geseas » Wed Feb 03, 2021 6:27 pm

I may have stumbled on a photo of this ' update method? Google Doc', just posted on Vamworld.

I apologize for above link. It is to a Google Document and an experiment. Please be encouraged to edit yourself and comment or suggested change. I do not know for sure if you need some kind of permissions even though I have it set on 'share to everyone'. I would like to know how it works. It may help here somehow...

Here is the photo I posted:

Please take a look at the 'R' in 'LIBERTY', where the gunk has receded a little due to repeated acetone soaks. Do you think that could be a radial die crack? I just noticed it after posting. Thanks

I would say "no" to the radial die crack. IMHO.

Thanks @Tekkie1 That goop was right up to that edge. It may have toned the silver that was underneath. I notice now above the 'R' and right at 'rim' is a weird effect. I think the schmutz covered that area also.

@Geseas Me thinks you should soak that lady in acetone overnight. A peek is not enough. Acetone will not damage that coin. IMO. Peace Roy

Thanks Namvet69. She is submerged as we speak. I agree with "A peek is not enough". It may just be time to sell as is. It is hard to resist stuff when its presented like that. Kind of like some Morgans on Ebay, hiding under a clouded layer of plastic.

Looks as if it may be a loong process of getting that stuff off. Best of luck though.

Thanks for the Luck. She is just going to have to get used to soaking in there for awhile.

Another photo maybe clearer:

@Tekkie1 very funny....
i'll bet this stuff would move with a cactus spine, under a microscope.

Thank you for your interest in this. I was working on getting this thread removed. I felt it maybe disgusting to folks and understand why...now. This coin has been looked at here: 1922-P Collar and Shoulder Clashes with a whole bunch of great contributions from Members.

I sure would like to grab one flaked up edge of that gunk on this coin and just gently pull; I bet a large piece would come right off, with no damage to the coin. As mentioned in other post, the dry hardwood, shaved kind of like a reed on a music instrument, work rather well. I pick them off my socks. :D (We heat with wood.) The thorns from Michigan woods look like a bullet train when viewed through a 10x Belomo. Sanding them reed thin did not work.
I have seen some extremely fine cactus spines, very interesting! Thanks @vamsterdam

@ Geseas...

If you do happen to use cactus needles( which is a great idea), be sure to wear glasses.
They do have a tendency to break and fly thru the air as they are brittle.
