1878S VAM-45.....????

Post by Prider358 » Wed Feb 03, 2021 3:32 pm

Hi everyone, I have narrowed this down to V45 due to mint mark position which is slightly to the right looking at coin. Still a newbee but having a go. :D

nope. try again. not the engraved wing feather. start there, and vam 45 has the "w" die polish lines inside the ribbon bow. this does not.

Hi vamsterdam, not sure what i'm missing here. The only obverse's i can find are 40,45 and 64 with the Die chip in eye lid. You've eliminated 45. I eliminated 40 because mint location is slightly to the left looking at coin, mine is opposite to this. The V64 does'nt appear to have a broken 'R' in trust. Well, now confused.

The starting point for a 78-S should be the engraved feather at the base of the wing on the viewer's left. This piece is pretty distinctive and really only leaves you with two choices.

Do you think the engraved area at the base of the wing on this piece actually looks like the images on the VAM 40 page?

BTW, that obverse marker you've gotten hung up on might not survive getting poked by a stick on your example. Maybe look for another marker, like in the gaps in the lower hair.

Since lewis spilled the beans, it’s a vam 69.

Sorry that I spilled the beans.
However I think after some one looks at a coin (78-S in particular) for a few days, and has not figured out what VAM it is, then being told the VAM is no harm, because that person has learned a lot about the method to identify VAMs.

Has anyone else noticed this coin appears to be struck through wood shavings? Take a look from the bottom of the eagles right wing down through the right talon and into the arrow feathers.

Thank you vampicker, vamsterdam and lewisr2 for your feedback and help. lewisr2 thanks for spilling the beans I will gladly clean them up  I am a NEWBEE and still learning. Depending on wear on coin and different lighting/angle of lighting, sore tired old eye's  It's a struggle some time's. Like lewisr2 said, if someone's been on a coin for a few day's (78S's), then they require more help, or, just spill the beans. Made my day, now on to the next 78S, or the next year. :D

Your latest closeup of that area appears to be just some discoloration or maybe a stain.
