1889-P VAM-23A Reverse Die Update

Post by PacificWR » Tue Feb 02, 2021 11:41 pm

Received my Christmas package back from LVA today. It took 5 ½ weeks , but that was no surprise. We have an update on the reverse die of the 1889-P VAM-23A. Looks like there are revisions for the 1889-P VAM-7A, VAM-7B, VAM-23, VAM-23A and VAM-23B, plus one new VAM which will be the earliest known use (new VAM) of the 1889-P VAM-23A reverse die. The letter from LVA is extensive and it will take me a couple of days to update the VAM listings and create the new VAM page. In addition, LVA has revised his September 2020 article on the VAM-23A. JR & JB, LVA has mailed each of you a copy of the revision. In addition, LVA has written a new article on the 1889-P Obverse dies that I will add to this post.

Ok, The revisions have been completed and the new VAM page is up. Just want to give a shoutout to Andy for his amazing detailed photography work. The work you and Rod do is incredible.

In the table below, click on the photo (until the + sign goes away) to enlarge it.

The first photo is the Discovery/Revision letter from LVA. Note LVA's comment about the retirement facility. The second photo is the new/revised VAM listings followed by the revised/new VAM photos. The last two photos in the table is LVA's new article on 1889-P Obverse dies followed by photos of each one.

there is another 1889o reverse die that shows lack of proper hardening. it is possible that these were all made at the same time. just as i suspect all of the 1972 p, d and s 1c doubled dies were made at the same time. and a number of 1878 p, s, and cc dies were made at the same time.

It still amazes me what a simple coin in my catch-all drawer sparked. Amazing 😎

Once it is all shaken out a good unhardened die set might be a compelling Registry addition.

Dies are shipped to branch mints unhardened and hardened by the mint that uses them, so there wouldn't necessarily be a link between the 89 obverse and 89-O reverse due to improper hardening.
