1878S VAM-31.....??????
Hi everyone, think I've attributed coin correctly but certainly need confirmation by others please. Not finding the 78'S's easy to VAM.

29 and 31 share the same obverse die. The gouge in the U can be seen from space.
MM location, mintmark location, and mint mark location.

Re: 1878S VAM-31.....??????
Steve,
Thanks for this post. I have two 78-Ss in as box to attribute at a later date. Your post made me realize that one of them is a VAM-31.
I took to heart the tip that you received from Tim "MM location, mintmark location, and mint mark location."
The mm location is a true giveaway. 29 & 31 have very different mm locations.
I'm sure that you can tell Tim that you know what VAM you have.
Thanks for your help Steve & Tim.

The 4th right star is broken, why would you want it?
Re: 1878S VAM-31.....??????
Thanks Tim and Lee for your feedback. Thank you Tim for assisting me to determine by mint mark location the correct VAM.
'31' it is.
'31' it is.
Re: 1878S VAM-31.....??????
Hi Flat-Chested, most 78S's have fourth right star broken and 'R' in Trust.

Re: 1878S VAM-31.....??????
Your welcome. I used to have most of them memorized. What this date mint really breaks down into is engraved wing feather or un-engraved wing feathers. On the engraved coins it further breaks down to the broken or not R in TRUST. Un-engraved wing feathers is where the fun begins. Craig and Leroy's Guide is the best tool(battle implement) ever devised
