1904 O V-5 Here it is Late Date Morgan Man

Post by twohawks » Sun Jan 17, 2021 3:44 pm

Well this coin is what looks to be the long lost VAM-5 "Maybe" It has the correct obverse die in an early die state where 2 defined scratches that are deeper than they look in my images around 1 &9 of the date. This die is said to be shared with the VAM 5 , VAM 6 and VAM 38.

The reverse die is not doubled so we can drop VAM-6 and 6a. The VAM 38 has strong polishing lines in the wings, between the legs and in and around the Bow, and this has no common PUPs of this die. So that leaves VAM 5 and 5a, with that said this reverse die has Zero rust spots so it has to be a VAM 5.

But wait there is more, the VAM 5a photo that can be seen here doesn't even come close to the BOW of this coin as well.

So it looks like a VAM-6 die 1. But to make sure is this the correct understanding. VAM-6 Die 2 is a the coin with the heavy polishing around the upper and lower section of viewers left wing.

I think you have it backwards. The reverse Die 2 does not have the polishing/scratches. Your coin has a spitting eagle (small die chip under eagle's beak), thus the same reverse as VAM-6A, i.e., VAM-6 Die Pair 2. Hope that helps.

this coin has polishing around the wing on both top and bottom and looks like its a fresh event. In the eagles mouth it has a faint line gouge or scratch, but that on the inside and extends from the eagles tongue.

Then seemingly you have a VAM-6A.

Take your pick, VAM-6.2 or VAM-6A. They are the same die pair.
