Nice!
I wonder what could caused the die to crumbled like that? Maybe something to do with the metal impurity on the die? The effect is the same as 1889-P VAM-7A, which makes me wonder maybe Philly mint shipped out the die that came from the same bad batch to O mint.

Love those eroded dies! I even have a DC. 88p IIRC, cant remeber the number off the top of my head right now. But the 13B is amazing in that it isn't simply outstanding rim or star crumbling. Its also manifesting around inner device outlines as well!

WOW, Nice find! I was lucky enough to purchase one in a ANACS 58 holder years ago.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

WOW! Nice find John, YOU SUCK!
Been quite a while since I've seen one of those beauties!
Ever tell you about the one I found? I ran across some fuzzy pictures of an 89-O on eBay and thought it may have had some crumbly stars and, to give you an idea just how fuzzy the pics were, I also thought it might even have a little luster left. I offered the seller $50 and they accepted. Well, long story short, when I finally got it back in the ANACS MS63 holder I fairly certainly abruptly had to change my pants! :D
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

Remember that dies are shipped to branch mints unhardened, and it's the responsibility of the branch mint to harden them correctly before use. If the hardening process is screwed up, the die could erode very quickly and/or collapse, resulting in these weird wear patterns all over the die.

Awesome catch! I'm really liking the extremely eroded dies and this one certainly qualifies for extreme.
