Very nice bay purchase!
Re: 1878 vam 70 / 70A ?
VAM 70A is said to be an early die state, so I imagine that most, if not all coins currently attributed as VAM 70 are now VAM 70A, and VAM 70 may not exist. The VAM 70 in 62DMPL pictured on CoinFacts has the VAM 70A die cracks. This is a listing that never should have been made unless one without cracks were to have been presented along with it.

Re: 1878 vam 70 / 70A ?
Haven't seen one without cracks, but more than one set in the SSDC registry list both. I suspect no crack specimens exist, so I keep looking...As to those coins I have seen, not sure what would be the dividing line between 70 / 70A. Can't say I believe V22C really exists either...At least with the V80/80B/80A there are die polish lines that distinguish between V80 and 80B. A true 80 plain is one tough bird, but that's how 99% attributed coins have been slabbed.
