Question to ponder

Post by RogerB » Fri Jan 15, 2021 2:23 am

On coins made by the U S Mint at Carson City, Nevada the mintmark is "CC." (The village was commonly called "Carson, Nevada" in contemporary mint documents.)

Which "C" stands for "City" and which for "Carson?"

Used in a sentence “ The City of Carson, Nevada”....

Carson City is what we are used to. Language from the past is much different than the grammar that is common these days that I am certainly guilty of.

Well the map of 1866 in LOC, 2 years after statehood, shows the name to be Carson City.

If the mintmark had been: "CN" for Carson, Nevada, it might have been called "Cyanide City." Cyanide was used in recovery of gold from crushed ore.

Sure enough. I could wastespend an awful lot of time looking at old maps there. The 1865 railroad map shows it that way, too.
