2020.... year in review

Post by lured_in_again » Fri Jan 01, 2021 1:23 am

Thought it might be fun to have a yearly list for quick reference. Feel free to add highlights from the year (e.g. "cherries" that merited a "you suck", big impacts on the hobby) Please try to avoid non-VAM stories, just wanting create a "top 10 or 25" list of finds, discoveries, accomplishments, etc. with links to the threads. No shame in posting links to your own thread. If this is a bad idea, feel free to delete......

For me, the group research behind the 1889 VAM 23A and related varieties was a pretty big deal
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

For myself , I just appreciate this site and all the helpful people .
This year I have focused on building my E Clasher set. I still have a handful to go though.

For all the bad news associated with COVID-19, it's kind of ironic that 2020 has turned out to be the best year that I have had with new picks. The local B&M coin gallery has really came through. Listed below are some of my top picks for the year.

1. 1889-P VAM-23A (MS-62). 7th known specimen.
2. 1878-P VAM-131 (MS-65).
3. 1878-P VAM-225A (MS-65).
4. 1880-CC VAM-4 (MS-64).
5. 1883-CC VAM-5B (MS-64 PL).
6. 1884-CC VAM-10A (MS-66).
7. 1884-O VAM-51 (MS-66).
8. 1886-O VAM-4 Rotated die (MS-60).
9. 1889-P VAM-23B (MS-64).
10. 1894-S VAM-7 (MS-65)

Work continues on my 1900-S die study and one other topic.

Find the 3A before I do. I think it is a single altered coin, but is out there. I have looked for it for decades.

I doubt its existence, personally.

Being able to snag one of the 1884-O VAM 56A coins was pretty cool. Paid up for it, but it's one of the coolest clashes I've seen since the 89 VAM 23A.

Think there is a very good chance that you are right about the VAM-3A.

Nothing is impossible, but I'm still labeling this one dubious in my journal.

LVA's notes list "exact same die cracks as VAM-3".

To have the exact same die cracks, it would need to be the exact same die.

If it were the exact same die, that means they would need to have repunched a mint mark into an already hardened die. If that were even possible, I'm sure he would have noted the new, sharper details on the mintmark opposed to the worn one.

Mintmark punches are tapered to where the high-point is slightly skinnier than the base. If it were repunched, it wouldn't just be a side-by-side overlap, but also a completely new, skinnier letter shown above the previous.

Me-thinks it was a simple mess-up that never got to be seen/corrected.

This 2020 has certainly been a year to forget given the covid-19 problem that has affected the whole world.
But 2020 is not a year that I will easily forget given the big luck I had to cherrypick maybe the 3 hardest VAMs of the Thornhead set

I have to say I'm always impressed with everyone's picks. 8-)

The best pick of the year for me was an 1888 VAM-15A.

I had a few picks in 2020 that I was happy with. But the top two were;

1880 VAM-53 (not 53A) in PCGS MS-63PL

1880 VAM-25B in PCGS MS-63

While I was able to find a few good coins mainly on internet sites, my best time was spent organizing my coins in order to get 23 VAM kills/revisions.
With the approval of 2 vaccines, & more on the way, things should soon get +/- back to normal with regard to coin shows & VAM collecting.

These are photos I posted earlier this year. There is an EDS without either the gouge or pitting. The photos below show the LDS with the gouge and pitting. There is a MDS with the gouge but not the pitting that I have been looking for an example for over a year to no avail. Looks like 2020 passed without finding a MDS. I have examples of both the EDS and LDS. Just waiting to find the MDS. Maybe 2021 will be kinder in that regard.
