Some stout prices on GC last night

Post by vamnuke » Mon Dec 28, 2020 1:12 pm

Not sure who “Colonel” is; many of that collection sold for solid prices on last night’s GC auction; can’t believe hammer price for 1879-S rev 78 V6 in PCGS MS 60 - over $2450 with juice!! I was just monitoring 1878 / 79-s rev 78 stuff. :o

I came away with a few coins, but none of the biggies. I upgraded my 78 VAM 170 and 92-O VAM 5 and bought the 89-O VAM 20A in 58. 79-S VAM 6 is a rare bird and the rare 79-S Rev. 78 varieties are going bonkers right now, and I'm not surprised at the sale price.

I imagine some prices would have been higher if it were easier to place a bid. You need 10-15 seconds to place a bid and have it accepted or find out it's too low. There were a few nuclear bids placed at the last second on lots I was bidding on, although I'm not sure how GC handles reserves.

I thought my bid was fairly strong on the 79-S Rev of 78 Vam 6, but it ended much higher than I expected. I had one in a Varslab many years ago(much lower grade), and have tried to find another. As Messy stated, rare for sure! I was surprised the 83 Vam 10 wasn't higher. Fun to watch these!

Was that 1889 o vam 1a a 1a2? It looked like a single neck clash but it had a reverse crack through the o . It went way higher than I could afford and a lot higher than 1a1 money so I assumed that it may of been the photo hiding the double clash? I ended up with a 1762 3 pence for 52.50 so happy with that

Hi All
Yep I was bidding on the 1879S rev 78 MS60 VAM6 also , but I puttered out at 1.2K .
But I was happy it went so High , but also surprised . Always a educational experience with these auctions .
I guess some of these coins are just picking up value Big Time .

On a lark, I looked at GC's Morgans for that sale and was VERY tempted to go on a bidding for a bunch of them, but held back and refused to let myself near the auction. Figured you guys would get in there and get some good ones and probably a number of bargains. Short of a VAM-215 or an 1895 business strike, I will not be a player ..... well, right now at least, LOL.

I'm especially pleased with the 89-O and 92-O. The 89-O has great luster and an easily seen clash. The 92-O has a great strike for a 92-O (VAM 5 tends to be better struck than most).

The 92-O is exception in the strike indeed. The breast feathers in UNCs are even typically flat and the ear doubling easily missed. Much identifiable rub on that coin. It is a nice slider.
