A Super CD list question..

Post by CascadeChris » Wed Sep 12, 2018 10:35 pm

Hey guys, a couple of questions if someone can help. Who put together the Super CD set and, on a more specific level, do obverse dies in the set that are the "money" die that were switched out with a new reverse still belong on the list similar to what happens with the top-100 for instance. Case in point, the 1904-o v28A Super CD "Trigger." The Trigger obverse is also shared with the v2A and v32 both of which still have a strong "trigger" showing so in would assume that the 2A & 32 are also considered Super CD's. Am I right? Thanks :)

Chris,
So far those are not included in the Super CD set. If they were included, at least one more would have to be added. 1880 VAM-57.

I only know your first question. Mark Kimpton started the Super CD set. If you are in the SSDC, you can read a little about it in VAMview #6, page 12.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

Thanks guys. I figured it was probably Mark's baby. Lee, that sucks. Why wouldn't it? The big, fat, bordering on insane G clash is the money shot and the sole reason it made the list, right. So why wouldn't other pairings with different reverses that still have the insane G qualify? I picked up a sexy AF raw 64 2A at Long Beach with subtle rim toning lending it a high level of eye appeal not typically afforded to subtle rim toners.

Chris,
I have no say at all about what coins are on a list or not.
My point is that the 28A is the one that was put on the list and for whatever reason the others were not.
I do understand your point.
Does this mean that you going to start working on a set? I hope so. I thought that you didn't do sets.
I love the Super CDs.

Ah. I wasn't thinking 3 dimensionality lee, ie that the 2A and 32 were already known when the 28A was put on the list. Seems kind of odd if that was the case but it makes more sense to me now. About doing a set eventually, I might go with the Super CD but when my finances improve. Right now my buying is mainly either stuff I can make a couple bucks on, cheaper stuff that catches my eye and any BU 81s's that cross my path to put away in hopes of doing an 81s die study one day.

Funny that you chose the "Trigger" as your example. A couple others have more right to tell this story than I do, but the 04-O VAM-28a was to Mark Kimpton what the Hotlips was to Leroy. It was what "triggered" him to do all of his fantastic work in the field of clashed dies! So, needless to say, it had to be included in his set.
Just like the 88-O VAM-7a was the first VAM to ever make me exclaim "WOW!" out loud...
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

If I am not mistaken, protocol in this situation is that the creator(s) of the Lists make the call whether to add a different die pair with the money side of the coin as one die to the list.

Maybe I am wrong, but the example I use is the 1902-O VAM-43. When it was listed, only one die pair was known. Subsequently, some real good die study guy found the money obverse married with 2 new different reverse dies. That coin sleuth checked with Jeff Oxman to see if the two new die pairs would be included in the Hit List 40. He agreed, so it is.

The whole back story is in the intro chapter in Mark's book, but the basic gist of it is I showed him my 04-O VAM 28A discovery piece, and he got very intrigued by clashed dies and being able to discovery new things. So yeah, it's not just that the first reported G clash was shaped like a trigger, it was the coin that triggered his interest.
As others have already noted, it's up to the author to agree to new additions to their list. Some of you may have noticed, the Super CD set is 25 coins. That was deliberate. He had other opportunities to add to the set including the varieties in question and elected not to. He is no longer active in dollar variety collecting or research, so don't expect the list to change any time soon.
I'd welcome a day when he returns to this field.

I wish that all major TPGs would attribute the Super CDs on their holders.
It is a Super set.

I thought the same Lee until I got -hooked on the SSDC Super CD Set. Before that I only participated in the PCGS Registry sets, it's just what I was doing before even I started VAM collecting seriously (read: sickness) but I got the clashed bug that I just couldn't shake. Once I started the SSDC set, I allowed myself to start collecting other TPGs to fill those slots. Now...it's not that big a deal but I agree that it would be more convenient if they all did attribute the Super CD set. It's certainly a worthy set to note.

OBTW...I really got hooked on the Super CD set through following some things that Pete (Vamhusker) was posting about clashed dies and we exchanged some PMs. Pete gave me a list of 8 got to have clashed die VAMs for me to search for, I only have 4 of the 8 so far but it turned out that they were the prelude to the Super CD set bug for me.

So what were the list of 8 that Pete gave you?
Pete has a lot to offer VW. It would be nice to hear from him more often.
